How serious is the damage caused by salty, coastal air to a car?

I'm considering purchasing a vehicle in a coastal region of the US. I was cautioned that it might not be as good a deal as it seems because of its proximity to the ocean. Should this be a deal breaker? If not, what kind of questions should I ask the seller to find out if there are any risks?

  1. Ask about rust. We live about a block from the ocean and my car seems good as new, but I have heard of the salt air making cars rust.
  2. salt air promotes corrosion, leads to total destruction of most vehicles in time. Don't buy it unseen, or at least uninspected by reputable, competent persons. It's your money at risk, and I doubt you can afford to waste it.
  3. True salt air causes exposed metal surfaces to corrode more rapidly. Also causes fasteners to freeze up potentially making repairs more expensive. You don't know fun until you've tried to remove a brake drum or rotor that's been wielded on by rust. The best thing would be to inspect the vehicle yourself or have it checked out by a trusted mechanic. You can't always trust the seller to be forthcoming. If it's not possible look elsewhere.
