- Large marine diesel engines can develop "hot spots" in their crankcases, leading to dangerous oil mist concentrations which, if undetected, can lead to severe mechanical damage and possibly crankcase explosions.. General accommodation and galley areas, passenger areas and entertainment complexes, especially on cruise ships and ferries, are at risk from fires involving fixtures, furnishings and cooking appliances. http://www.kfp.co.uk/utcfs/ws-438/Assets/OMD%20Marine%20SHS%20Data%20Sheet.pdf
