  1. Engineering would be a good choice. Check out these links: http://www.usmma.edu/ http://www.csum.edu/ http://www.mainemaritime.edu/ http://www.maritime.edu/ http://www.nmc.edu/maritime/ http://www.sunymaritime.edu/ http://www.tamug.edu/
  2. When you graduate from a Academy, you depart with a degree in Nautical Science, and a third mates license. You do get promoted by hard work, but first must upgrade your license.
  3. If you are going deck you can major in Marine Transportation. When you graduate and after taking the Coast Guard exams you will be issued a 3rd mates license. After completing 360 sailing days on your license you will upgrade to 2nd mate and then gain to Chief mate and then on to Captain. So yes hard work, but also you will need sea time on each license before you can earn your Captains license. Of course this is if you want to sail with the big boys and have an unlimited license. You can always get a Captains license with limited tonnage faster and work on smaller boats.
