- Cal Maritime is one of seven Maritime schools in this country--and the only one on the west coast. It is part of the California State University system, and, as such, is cheaper for California residents than it is for non-residents. Though you will receive a general MechE degree, many of your classes may be geared towards ship engineering. You will spend some of your time sailing on the training ship The Golden Bear. Although not a military school (there is no obligation to join the Coast Guard or Navy or Merchant Marines), students are referred to as the Corps of Cadets. They wear uniforms and have a strict discipline code. The school does not seem particularly hard to get into; if you're a California resident with a 3.0 GPA, for example, you do not need to submit SAT scores. (The average overall SAT score is 1088.) Good luck. csum.edu
